Tony was a late comer to brass band playing, having begun to play at the age of 47. "I came to the band not being able to read music, although I could play a tune by ear. I had some great help from many of the band to help me get my cornet playing up to speed. In particular, John Coooper, who played with me on third cornet and was an ever present guide ; Brian Harrison, who gave me one-to-one tuition ; and Martyn France, our then MD who was very supportive of my development."
Tony made good progress and was given award the "Most Improved Player" in 2003.
When holidaying in Dorset and Cornwall Tony occasionally plays with Swanage Town Band and Saltash Town Band. "It's really nice to able go on holiday and still get a practice in."
